Today in English I we finished reading Roald Dahl’s “The Landlady.” For the final assignment for this story, you must use the inferences you made in your notes to come up with an alternative ending. Dahl ends the story with a cliffhanger, which means that the conflict is not really resolved. Write your own ending as if you are Dahl, considering the following questions: What happens after Billy drinks the tea? Is the Landlady hiding something? What happened to her other guests? Your ending must be at least fifteen sentences long. Be sure to proofread for grammar and spelling errors!
We will continue our unit on suspenseful short stories with “The Sniper” by Liam O’Flaherty, which we will begin reading tomorrow. Students will continue to develop their inference skills and analyze the suspense, conflict, themes, and characters in this story, just as we did with “The Landlady.”
